The granny square is the first thing most of us learn after the chain. Four rounds, four colors, and a shape you can repeat into a blanket, a bag or a cardigan.
Supplies
- Worsted-weight cotton yarn in 4 colors (about 20 g total)
- 4 mm (G-6) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Abbreviations (US terms)
| ch | chain |
| sl st | slip stitch |
| sc | single crochet |
| hdc | half double crochet |
| dc | double crochet |
| * * | repeat between asterisks |
Instructions
Tick each step when you finish it: the page remembers where you stopped.
- Start Make a magic ring (or ch 4 and join with a sl st to form a ring).
- Round 1 Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2. *3 dc in ring, ch 2*. Repeat from * 2 more times. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. You have 4 clusters of 3 dc.
- Round 2 Join new color in any ch-2 space (a corner). In the same corner: ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, then ch 1. *In next corner: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1*. Repeat 2 more times, join with sl st.
- Round 3 Join new color in a corner and work the corner (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), ch 1. *3 dc in side space, ch 1, corner (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), ch 1*. Repeat around and join with sl st.
- Round 4 Same logic: every corner gets 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc; every side space gets 3 dc separated by ch 1. Now there are 2 clusters on each side.
- Finish Cut yarn leaving a 4″ tail, pull through the loop and weave in all ends with the tapestry needle.
Tip: Change colors in a corner, never in the middle of a side. The join hides inside the ch-2 space.
